Leicester Red-Thread Limited

Leicester Red-Thread Limited (LRT) registered as a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee on 9th November 2015. Structured as a co-operative, it`s trading titles are Leicester Red-Thread Co-operative and Leicester Red-Thread Co-op.

LRT is developing a new centre with the working title, `Leicester International Workers Centre for Social and Economic Justice`. The Centre will fight for equality, the unemployed and those who are in-work yet are still in poverty, or at risk of falling into unemployment and poverty, including the self-employed and others in precarious employment.

The decision to set-up Leicester Red-Thread and establish a Leicester International Workers Centre is grounded in support from the Trade Union movement locally and nationally. Leicester & District Trades Union Council and Leicestershire County Association (L&DTUC) awarded the Centre project a TUC development grant.

LRT undertakes social and economic development, project management and trade union supporting activities. These activities are by and for the benefit of the working class and are reflected in regular reports and presentations to L&DTUC and other Labour and Trade Union movement organisations.

Research and planning for the new Centre is being undertaken to help ensure the Centres effectiveness and viability. The new Centre will utilise the vast experience of locally, nationally and internationally based Trade Unionists and supporters.

LRT`s Constitution is based on a model provided by the Leicester Co-operative and Social Enterprise Development Agency. This has been amended to include the Objects and Membership criteria that are particularly Trade Union focused. Powers include fundraising, the receiving of grants, donations and borrowing.

The name Red-Thread is multifaceted and includes links to Asian storytelling and work in the Leicester Hosiery, Knitwear, Apparels and Fashion Sectors.

Red-Thread seeks to unite trade unions and their members behind a new Centre, a trade union, community education and resource centre.
